India will soon become the most populated country in the world. Being a native of India, Sujo has an opportunity to reach areas in India that cannot be evangelized by today’s missionaries. Because of this, SJM has a special focus on the country of India
India is currently the second most populated country in the world, with a population of over a billion people and is the seventh largest country by geographical area. India's history goes back to 3,200 BC when Hinduism (82% of the population) was first founded. Buddhism, Jainism, Islam and Christianity all exist within the country today. India also has the third largest Muslim population in the world following Indonesia and Pakistan.
The economy of India is the fourth largest in the world as measured by purchasing power parity (PPP), with a GDP of US $3.63 trillion dollars. India is the second fastest growing, major economy in the world, with a GDP growth rate of 9.1% (as of the first quarter of 2006). India's large English speaking middle-class has contributed to the country's growth in Business Process Outsourcing (BPO's). India is also emerging as a major exporter of financial, research and technology services.
The mission of SJM’s Impact India is to impact the nation of India with the gospel of Jesus Christ.
This is a nation where Thomas the Apostle preached. During the early Church, extensive trade relations existed between Malabar, India and the Mediterranean countries. According to tradition, Thomas the Apostle traveled to India to preach the Gospel among the Jewish colonies in Malabar during the second quarter of the first century. However, it is now one of the largest un-reached nations. Millions living in villages and cities across India have never heard about Jesus Christ.
SJM has strategic partnerships with key churches and Bible colleges in India. SJM’s mission is to see new churches planted, to mentor national Church leaders and to be involved in humanitarian efforts.
